The Port: It's happening

Role

Stage 2, Marina Cove, Newport Quays, expected completion 2008

The centrepiece of Port Adelaide's revitalisation is Newport Quays, a unique residential and commercial development in a waterfront setting that features a mix of housing styles that will eventually accommodate 4000 people and 2000 new dwellings.

The $2 billion project will also include six kilometres of promenades, pedestrian and cycling networks, parklands and marina berths.

The Port Centre Coordination Group (PCCG) was established jointly by the South Australian Land Management Corporation, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield and Newport Quays development consortium (comprising Urban Construct and Multiplex) to ensure that the social and economic benefits of the redevelopment project are shared by Port Adelaide and the surrounding area. It is anticipated that the project will create up to 2000 jobs after its completion.

The PCCG, using a 'place management' approach, is working with stakeholders to develop and implement strategies for the social, environmental and economic rejuvenation within the Port Adelaide Centre and Semaphore Road.

The key functions of the PCCG include:

  • facilitating and coordinating private and public capital investment for the rejuvenation of this unique area
  • coordinating capital investment for the rejuvenation strategy
  • business attraction and development
  • marketing and promotion of the Port, including tourism attraction
  • supporting event and festival activity
  • assessing future infrastructure requirements
  • community development through a greater capacity to use local input and resources

The PCCG is committed to working in partnership with the community to ensure that local considerations, including the area's unique heritage character, are considered in the area's revitalisation.

Bringing New Life to the Port Centre

How might the Port look in ten or twenty years' time?  In mid 2005, the Government of South Australia and Council, commissioned the preparation of a document to guide the future development of the Port Centre.

After extensive research, community consultation and analysis the Port Adelaide Centre Vision and Framework (6.9mb pdf) has been released as a pivotal document to help guide Council, Government and private sector decision making in the Port Centre for the next 25 years. A summary version (1.3mb pdf) of the Port Adelaide Centre Vision and Framework is also available.

In 2006 the City of Port Adelaide Enfield endorsed the Port Adelaide Centre Vision and Framework” as a basis for future budget considerations, negotiations with Government agencies to assist with the revitalisation of the Port Adelaide Centre and guidance to the business and general community.

Key recommendations of the document are now being progressed and include the preparation of:

  • A Public Domain Manual for the Port Adelaide Centre to guide the selection of public domain materials and elements such as paving, street furniture, lighting and landscaping.
  • Concept Plans for St Vincent Street and Commercial Road to guide the future upgrading of these key roads. The St Vincent St & Commercial Rd Concept Plan, July 2007 report presents work done to date on this project. More detailed plans will be developed as the project progresses and will be made available for review and comment.
  • A Plan Amendment Report (PAR) to review the zoning policies of the Port Adelaide Centre Zone. The Draft Port Adelaide Centre PARhas been released for public exhibition and the public are invited to comment on the draft document up to Friday, 1 February 2008. An Information Sheet provides a snapshot of the key features of the PAR and details the consultation arrangements including how and when people can comment.
