Events

Port Adelaide is a fascinating place to visit.

As a once thriving port and gateway to Adelaide, the area is rich in history and this is captured in the famous Maritime Museum, one of five in the area, and other heritage sites.

The Port River and nearby beaches are popular recreation areas, with extensive facilities for sailing and powerboats, and for those who enjoy walking or riding, promenades and pathways offer an extensive network to explore the area's many attractions.

There is also a thriving artistic community, with the work of resident artists contributing to exhibitions and events that capture Port Adelaide's distinctive character. Attractions abound and both visitors and locals can enjoy a broad selection of pubs and an ever-increasing number of cafes and restaurants.

August to November 2008
Be Active Corporate Cup - West
Braving the winter elements to exercise can be challenging, but there is no excuse this year for workers in the Port. The Corporate Cup starts Thursday 14th August at the Lighthouse in Black Diamond Square, Port Adelaide. Teams of up to seven have a choice of running or walking the Waterfront Super Circuit between Birkenhead Bridge and Dock One. Merchant Navy Day
Line-up along the wharf's edge at Port Adelaide and witness Australia's first ever ‘Merchant Navy Day’ march! Starting at 11:00am, serving and former merchant seamen, their families, the Maritime Union of Australia, and other maritime groups will walk behind a Royal Australian Navy contingent. The march will conclude with a special commemoration at the superb Navigator memorial to Lost Seafarers by local sculptor Karen Genoff, where a short service will be conducted by the new Port Adelaide Chaplain Rev Roger Trebilcock. 50th Anniversary: Blessing of the Fishing Fleet
The day begins with a 9:30am Mass at St Mary’s Church, Dale Street, Port Adelaide then at 2pm the grand procession to the wharf where a statue is carried and placed on a boat, followed by the Blessing of the Fishing Fleet and boats, then return to the church.

Semaphore Music Festival
Dust off your cowdy gear, put on your dancing shoes, and get on down to Semaphore for a knees-up, hog stompin’ good time! Free outdoor concerts held on the foreshore Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Visit the website for the full program.

Ticklish Allsorts at the National Railway Museum
Get into the school holiday fun with ‘Ticklish Allsorts’ performing a special show at the National Railway Museum, Lipson Street, Port Adelaide. Two shows daily 11am and 1pm. Art at the Hart
Awaken your artistic nature and heighten the senses at the Port’s own Artists’ Market. Come along a meet the maker! South Australian artists will be showcasing their creative oeuvre! Wander through a free artisan marketplace and purchase that truly unique Christmas gift. Held in conjunction with Celtica ’08 at the Port Waterfront Promenade adjacent historic Hart’s Mill, Mundy Street, Port Adelaide.

Celtica ‘08
A two day journey celebrating the rich culture of the Celts from Europe and the British Isles through music, art and dance. Held in conjunction with Art at the Hart, in the shadow of the historic Hart’s Mill, Mundy Street, Port Adelaide.

The Seahorse Farm
Visit the Port’s newest attraction.  Located at 20 Divett Street, Port Adelaide, the Seahorse Farm offers a unique tour experience through this fascinating aquarium dedicated to the preservation and conservation of seahorses and seadragons.

Cruising and Dolphin Spotting on the Port River

Spend a lazy afternoon spotting dolphins and taking in the river views on a cruise along the Port River. Cruise operators Port Princess Dolphin Cruises and Port River Dolphin Cruises depart from the wharf promenade, Lighthouse Square, Commercial Road.

South Australian Maritime Museum

Explore ever-changing exhibitions which highlight South Australia’s fascinating maritime history and its connections to the sea and water environments. Housed in the historic Bond Stores from the 1850’s, the Museum’s exhibition galleries offer a historical journey of revelation, exploration and stimulation.

Take a trip into railway history at Australia's top railway attraction. The National Railway Museum, houses the largest undercover collection of locomotives, passenger carriages and freight vehicles in Australia.

South Australian Aviation Museum

“Chocks away old chap!” Discover South Australia’s largest collection of aircraft and aircraft memorabilia at the new aviation complex.  Experience the nostalgic sound of famous aircraft engines from WWI and WWII at the only aircraft engine run staged by a museum in Australia.

Fishermen's Wharf Markets

Haggle 'til it hurts at the unique and eclectic Fishermen's Wharf Markets. Everything from books, toys, antiques and jewellery and much more. From 9am - 5pm next to the Lighthouse.

Port Adelaide Lighthouse

Climb the 74 (or is it 75?) steps of the Port Adelaide Lighthouse and enjoy amazing views of the Port, the South Australian coastline and the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Australian Museum Of Childhood
Step back in time to playtime and see children's toys that date back as early as the 1890s. Discover the fads and trends of children at play.
Hands-on fun for everyone; enjoy new experiences mixed with old fashion styles, from skittles and hula-hoops to planes, trains and automobiles. Social change and development are revealed through unique displays and photographs.
